The Métis
The Métis are a constitutionally-protected Indigenous people in Canada with their own language, culture, and history.
Many early European fur traders married First Nations women to help them surivive and operate in this foreign land. Children of these unions learned the unique lifestyle of their parents through experience and oral stories. Their descendants protected this way of life and today are known as the Métis .
The Métis cultural homeland cnetres on the Red River settlement (now Winnipeg), and extends outward along trade routes towards parts of the northern Ontario, the northern United States, northern British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories.
